Ah, cannabis: a plant that caused debates, illuminated rooms and transformed economies. For many of us who remember the days when mentioning marijuana was taboo, the current landscape is surprising. We are a walk of memory and let’s see how cannabis went from the shadows of the prohibition to the center of profitability.

The first days: from medicine to the threat

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, cannabis was not the outlaw we later met. He was commonly in tinctures and medications, praised by his therapeutic property. However, as the twentieth century developed, social attitudes begged to change. The influx of Mexican immigrants after the Mexican revolution introduced the use of recreational cannabis to US culture. Unfortunately, this coincides with the culture of xenophobia, which leads to the plant being unfairly associated with crime and deviation.

The Hammer Falls: Criminalization occurs

In the 1930s, the winds of change were strongly against cannabis. The Federal Narcotics Office, under leadership or Harry J. Anslinger, launched a fervent campaign against marijuana. Sensational stories and movies such as “Reefer Madness” painted the plant as a social scourge. This culminated in the Marijuana Tax Law of 1937, which criminalizes cannabis throughout the country.

The counterculture and repressions

Let’s quickly advance to the sixties and seventies: a peace signal, rock ‘n’ roll and a counterculture understood that hugged cannabis as a symbol of rebellion. Despite its growing popularity among young people, the establishment was not influenced. The 1970 controlled substances law classified marijuana as a drug from Annex I, considers it devoid of medical value and groups it together with the heroine and LSD.

Green outbreaks of change: Medicinal marijuana emerges

The 1990s marked the change of a fundamental change. California, always the Stendsetter, approved proposition 215 in 1996, legalizing medicinal marijuana. This movement recognized the possible therapeutic benefits of the plant, especially for patients with chronic diseases. Other states observed and followed their example, which led to a gradual reevaluation of cannabis role in medicine and society.

Recreational revelations: states open the path

The 21st century witnessed a seismic change in cannabis policy. Colorado and Washington reached the headlines in 2012 by legalizing the use of recreational marijuana. This bold movement not only challenges federal laws, but also opened floods so that other states reconsider their positions. As of today, numerous states have adopted recreational cannabis, reflecting a significant transformation in opinion and public policy.

Economic high: from illegal to industry

The economic implications of legalization have been deep. States with legal markets have witnessed an increase in tax revenues, employment creation and economic activity. For example, the New York cannabis market is thriving, since it approaches the $ 1 billion brand in total sales from the legalization two years ago. The market has won impulse despite the initial challenges such as demands, illegal markets and delays in the distribution of retail licenses. Currently, there are 245 license points, which generate $ 22 million in tax revenues for local governments and $ 16.6 million for the state’s treasure.

Horizon challenges: banking and regulation

Despite the green race, the challenges persist. The federal cannabis prohibition creates a murky legal environment, especially in relation to banking and interstate trade. Many cannabis companies fight with limited access to banking services, which leads to financial and security challenges. Efforts such as Banca Safe are aimed at addressing thesis problems, but a comprehensive federal solution is still difficult to achieve.

A personal reflection: witness the transformation

For those of us who have lived the era of “Just no di no”, the current acceptance and marketing of cannabis are notable. From what was once whispered in Hushed Tones now is openly discussed, announced and even celebrated. It is a will for the evolutionary perspectives of society and the durable impact or the basic defense.

Looking to the future: the future of cannabis

As we look to the future, cannabis trajectory seems prepared for greater normalization and integration in several sectors, from medicine to recreation. However, it is essential to address this new border with full attention, ensuring that regulations protect public health, promote social equity and rectify fit the injustices associated with the prohibition.
