Tracee Ellis Ross and Rashid Black mirror Season 7 Episode 1, “Common People”. It is not a coincidence, given the plot of the episode.

** Spoiler alert: this article contains details about Black mirror Season 7 **

In “Common People”, the actresses star in two women who have experienced medical emergencies, leading a topic to Riammind, a new innovative procedure that implies technology in their brains and keeps them lives through a backup copy of a server. However, the product only works with the subscription of Riammind, which has an intensive cost and a dangerous price.

Talking to Decider on a round table before the launch of season 7, the promotions opened about the importance of their characters being colored women in the health -centered episode and how that impacted their perception of the material.

“I think for me, it was the first thing I thought, but now son of looking at him, I think, obviously, such a problem with maternal health and reproductive health for women of color in the United States. Jones said.

According to disease control centers, black women are three times more likely that the complications of pregnancy and motherhood than white women. In addition, Boston University research shows that disparities extend far beyond pregnancy, since black women face greater risks of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, lupus and certain types of cancer. It is not a shock, then, that Gaynor (Ellis Ross) would be a reliable person when he approaches Mike (Chris O’Dowd) about being able to save his wife (Jones) from a certain death.

“Probably, subconsciously at some level, seeing me in this person who is trying to help me, [I think] It will make me trust them … In this particular iteration, it is a very cynical use of that idea that representation is important, “said Jones.

It does not take long since the time of Amanda’s surgery so that things take a dark turn, since Gaynor’s free surgery promised and a small cost of monthly subscription weakening to the couple and spends invoice. In addition, the side effects of the lower level of the Riammind subscription begin to raise their ugly head and cause Amanda and Mike as many emotional and financial problems such as physicists. It is a marked reflection of the way in which the US health system is directed.

For Ellis Ross, it is equally gloomy since his own letter is a Rivermind patient who turned to take advantage of other vulnerable and distressed people, knowing that he could bank or make their lives a living nightmare and awake. And there are no spoilers, but that is exactly what happens in “Common People”, easily the saddest episode of season 7.

He Brides The actress told reporters the open conversation that tries not to see her character as a sinister, but as a perfect example of the system in the place in the United States and what could continue to happen if things do not change course and fast.

“I don’t think I thought it was evil. I think that is the way it presents itself, but it is a person who was perpetrated in their own vulnerability and is now what the perpetrator does,” said Ellis Ross.

“That is the thing, the cycle is really difficult to break on both sides,” Jones added. “If there is a way to earn money and save yourself, you will. It is capitalism.”

He Black-escenic The student continued: “And she is a representation of greed, but I don’t think anyone intends to be a bad person. I think most people have many, whether or not, they think they are the right thing, even if it is managed.”
