The Boy Scouts of America have changed their name to “Scouting America”. Virtualy All mentions of the word “Boy” have been eliminated from the updated Scouting America website, even from the timeline detailing the foundation and historical reference points of the Organization 1910.
Lord Baden-Powell, the original founder of the exploration movement in early 1900, modeled his “explorers” after the army. Today, “Scouting America” encourages children to “have fun” in “a cozy and safe environment where explorers can express themselves freely.”
In recent years, an increasing number of Americans has recognized that children and men face unique (social, emotional and development) challenges deserve attentive and support. Since 2010, adolescents have experienced a 161 percent increase in depression. Last year, the American Institute of Children and Men cited that boys are usually a level of grade behind girls in English language arts. In 2023, the data of the United States Census Office revealed that approximately 18 million American children, approximately one in four, live without an active father at home.
Public schools have changed expectations of mental hardness and commendable character for “equitable safe spaces” and “restorative discipline.” Young sports teams deliver particle trophies on behalf of “inclusion.” The American Library Association openly supports the hours of the history of Drag Queen for children. And, until recently, military enlistment in the United States reached a historical minimum.
From higher drop -out rates and mental health struggles to the pressures of navigating the social expectations that change rapidly, many children and young people are looking for guidance, connection and purpose. A vital way of addressing thesis challenges is to invest in programs focused on men that foster healthy masculinity, along with resources that inspire young men to be the best.
For decades, organizations such as the boy scouts gave children a structured environment where they could develop leadership, resistance and a strong sense of identity. These types of programs offer more than outdoor skills (promote tutoring, responsibility and service to others, which are essential ingredients for personal growth, and the exact values that are missing in much of the current youth culture. Fortunately, some new organizations, such as Trail Life USA, have intensified to complete the emptiness that has bone created by changes in Boy Scouts of America.
Another essential part to address thesis challenges is to expose children and young people to resources that are educational, attractive and rooted in significant values. One of the most effective ways to do so is to teach history through the lens of American exceptionalism, a legacy built by pioneer pioneers defined by courage, self -sufficiency and determination.
