“Beltrán Guzmán and the BL have continued to operate with violent impunity, mortal drug trafficking, threatening communities and attacking key officials, all while benefiting from their criminal schemes,” said Treason’s secretary. “The treasure, in close association with our law colleagues, will continue to interrupt the operations of the posters and their affiliates that allow the traffic of mortal drugs such as fentanyl through our border and our communities.”
Beltran Guzman is Alfredo’s son “El Mochomo” Beltrán Leyva, a former leader of the poster who is serving life imprisonment in an American prison. The Mochomito is also Joaquín’s nephew “El Chapo” Guzmán, one of the supreme leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, which currently meets a life in an American prison.
In 2016, the Mexican authorities had arrested El Mochomito for arms charges, but was released in 2021. Duration in their time in prison, supposedly tortured and extorted prisoners while continued their drug trafficking business.
The designation of the treasure blocks all assets and accounts linked to Beltran Guzmán and prohibits any American citizen from doing business with him at the risk of facing similar sanctions.
