Freepik releases an ‘open’ AI image generator trained on licensed data

Freepik, the online graphic design platform, presented a new “open” image image on Tuesday that the company says it was exclusive of commercial images with commercial license, “safe for work.”

The model, called F Lite, contains around 10 billion parameters, the parameters being the internal components that make up the model. F lite developed in association with the startup of the Fal.AI and was formed using 64 GPU of NVIDIA H100 in the course of two months, according to Freepik.

F lite joins a small and growing collection of generative models trained in license data.

We have worked in secret on this for months! You finally feel good to share it!

The generative AI is at the Center for Criminal Demands against AI companies, including Openi and Midjourney. It is frequently developed using massive amounts of content, including copyright content, public sources on the web. Most companies that develop thesis models argue that fair use protects their practice of using copyright to train without compensating owners. Many creators and IP rights holders do not agree.

Freepik has made two flavors or F lite noticeable, standard and texture, both or that were trained in an internal data set of around 80 million images. The standard is more predictable and “fast of faith”, while the texture is more “prone to mistakes”, but offers better creative textures and compositions, according to the company.

Here is an image of the standard model generated with the notice “a person who is stopped in front of a sunset, in a majestic environment.”

Freepik does not affirm that F Lite produces images superior to leading images such as Midjourney’s V7, Flux Family de Black Forest Labs or others. The objective was to make a model openly available so that developers can be able to and improve it, according to the company.

That said, executing F Lite is not an easy task. The model requires a GPU with at least 24 GB or VRM.

Other companies that develop general media models in license include Adobe, Bria, Getty Images, Moon Valley and Shutterstock. Depending on how demands for the copyright of AIs are shaken, the market could grow exponentically.
