The governor of California, Gavin Newsom (D), announced Wednesday that the State is demanding President Donald Trump for his recent tariffs, claiming that they are hurting the State and that it lacks the authority to promulgate them.
“President Trump’s illegal rates are causing chaos in the families of California and our economy, raising prices and threatening works. We are defending US relatives who cannot afford the chaos to continue the statement.
The lawsuit cites the “doctrine of main questions” of the Supreme Court of the United States, a legal principle that assumes that Congress must evaluate the issues of important political or economic importance. The Supreme Court was based on the doctrine to reduce the laws related to the control of pollution and forgiveness of student loans under presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, said the governor’s office.
Newsom and the California Legislature have reserved $ 50 million for legal actions against the Administration, despite asking for $ 40 billion in help to recover from recent forest fires.
The State is also borrowing billions of dollars per month simply to pay its Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, after Newsom expanded last year last year to include illegal foreigners.
Newsom and Bonta expect to challenge Trump’s authority on the argument that, although the previous presidents have used their emergency powers to impose sanctions on foreign enemies, no president before Trump has done so to impose tariffs on trade.
It is not clear what the net economic effect of Trump’s tariffs will be, and the American public seems to be divided on the subject, and some applaud Trump’s leadership and others fearful or economic uncertainty.
