Betty Bop never Reaxly He went away.
The iconic cartoon character of the era of depression, which remained omnipresent during much of the twentieth century, is back once again. This time, the screened and acute flapper with the unmistakable Bob serves as the point of inspiration and jump for the new fish musical comedy out of the “Bop” water at the Broadhurst theater in New York.
The new newcomer Jasmine Amy Rogers makes her debut on Broadway as the owner Betty Bop, which is accidentally sent from an elegant grandfather Art Deco in black and white of modicn Technicolor Comicn. Vetpythen, Vetamphen Fet Payhen, Vetamphen Vetamphen, Vetamphen, Vetamphen’s Fet Pardhalkehen (played by Byphalk “Vetamphalk. Character with a real look comic) and, yes, hijinks, a critical love story and a political plot given of a corrupt candidate).
Basically, think of “Barbie” meets the “Moderny Times” of Chaplin with a hint of “returning to the future” and you have the “Boop” recipe of Madcap.
However, what makes this self -referential and friendly production for the family so special is not just its inventive history. The large -scale caramel color sets (which are changed to a fast fire clip), exactly choreographed dance numbers and jazz and swing music by Bassy Big Band, all wow and remind us why the live theater experience is so vitual. There are no editions or cuts in “Bop”, only gifted artists and artisans operating at the height of their powers.
For more information about spectacularly silly but ambitious production that mocks its source material, the New York Post spoke with the composer David Foster his multiple generous score, the cartoon but cinematographic tourmatic Turmatic McPhee.
How did you choose “Bop”?
I did not choose “bop.” 15 years ago, nobody asked me to do a Broadway musical. No one had suggested. [This show] It was the first thing I was asking “Would you like to try this?” And I was like “Of course I would love to try it.” He was ready for a new challenge, but he had never let a big fan of the character.
In the past, I worked a lot with Dolly Parton, and I always saw similarities between Betty and Dolly. Everything that comes out of Dolly’s mouth is somehow a lesson. She does not necessarily mean doing that, but it is only built that way.
I feel the same with Betty. Everything that comes out of your mouth is ordered or a lesson. I am not trying to scare away anyone from the musical because it is not heavy. She only shares common sense things that should not be tasks for granted.
What was your main inspiration for the score?
I tok Piano Lessons as a child, but my father was a really talented amateur pianist and played the Stride piano, which is like the music of Honky-Tonk. God bless him, he has taught me patiently to play when I was seven years old, so I had a good base for “baptized.”
By composing the score, I tried to make music that could not be set at a period of time. I wanted it to seem that I could have written the legs today or a hundred years ago.
On a more practical level, there is a story to tell here and sometimes the creative team has certain song needs. For example, a Upempo song has to be fun, you need to have a dance break, etc. I just tried to remember where I was, remember what my father had taught me about that music period and apply my pop writing skills.
I really received a lot of breath on the first day, 15 years ago, when the producers said “towards the end of the program, we have a true inflatable number” and, without thinking, I went to the piano and the song “Why look Around the corner” fell. Here, that song survived after coming to me immediately in the first five minutes of the first meeting.
Why is the song ‘Boop’ your favorite?
There is a song at the beginning of the program called “Ordinary Day”. In him, Betty sings “I want one day to be ordinary, just be me, just not be surprising anyone from nowhere and have normal friends,” And I like this because it is unusual. I have many criticisms in my life for writing soft things, but this song is a bit avant -garde in its presentation.
How has the program changed since you involved for the first time in the project?
I have probably seen the program 50 times and has changed dramatically from Chicago, where he debuted. Jerry Mitchell is a brilliant director and choreographer, and the team really offered a really fun show of two and a half hours.
Even so, it is different in the pieces. In particular, the story of Gampy and Valentina changed a lot. I am in many of the trials, so I see the changes in real time. Jerry approaches the program in the way I approach to make music.
When I am recording, I try to fix every detail knowing that if you let one or two details come out as a note out of tuning, no one really worries, but make perfect for a better song.
Jerry does the same with his direction, there are some things that catch that he would never be notified and I think the culmination of all those details for a much better show.
How was the work with the cast?
The cast is incredible. They work to the bone every day. They work all day, every day, in the theater and then a show after that. It is remarkable.
I think Jasmine Amy Rogers becomes Betty from the first to the last painting. More importantly, if you observe your face at any time of the two more hours, it is never out of place, or for a second. I think it will become a star.
What’s still for you?
This is my first Broadway show, but I am really working on another at this time called “Lucky Us” based on an author named Amy Bloom. We just read with an incredible director named Michael Grace. My writing partner in that is Annmarie Milazzo, and she is also incredible.
You can be assured on Broadway now for the final chapter of my life.
Are you going this year?
YEAH. Katarina [McPhee, Foster’s wife] And I will try to mix it. In addition to my songs, we escape from the performance classics that we both love. Just a couple of nights, I was metal with the song ‘Impossible Dream’, which is not mine, but it’s great and I just know that the cat would make it very well.
Any favorite program on Broadway at this time?
We saw “death becomes it” and we loved it. “Othello,” too. I thought Denzel was great, but Jake Gyllenhaal impressed me. I don’t know much about Shakespeare, but he brought the words to 2025.
We both also caught “good night and good luck” with George Clooney, who was great.
Then, we get used to the opening night of “Sunset Boulevard” and we loved it. I never saw the original, but Nicole Scherzinger is excellent. His performance is so epic. The music is great, the set, the design, all phenomenal.
