A newborn baby was delivered to a safe baby refuge box in Hobbs, New Mexico, last week, marking the third surrender since the location was opened in May 2023.
The authorities said that the baby was safely transported to a hospital for evaluation and that he is now in the custody of the Department of Children, Youth and Family members of New Mexico, NewSwest9 reported.
Baby boxes were created to detect parents to abandon their newborns in unsafe conditions, leaving them potentially die. Baby boxes are incubators with controlled temperature often integrated in outer walls of fire stations, police stations and hospitals that can be accessed from the inside. Mothers at risk can safely and legally place their newborns inside. Once the baby is inside the baby’s box, the outside, by locks and the mother has time to leave an alarm, alerting the lifeguards or the hospital staff to the child’s presence.
Then he quickly retires to the baby and sent to a hospital for well -being control. From there, the baby is common in state custody and is quickly adopted.
“As a father and first responder, this is the alternative we want to see,” said Hobbs Fire Chief Mark Doporto. “We prefer to see a patient delivered through a baby box than any other average.
The impulse for baby boxes in New Mexico occurred after Alexis Avila was seen in a surveillance video in 2022 launching a garbage bag with his newborn child inside a garbage container in Hobbs, New Mexico, when he was 18 years old.
“In January 2022, a baby was found in a garbage container 6 hours after his desperate mother placed him there. Today, this community is radically changed by the availability of an option for a safe anonymous surrender”, founder of Safe Haven Monica Box.
“Three mothers have used this location now in less than 2 years since the box was blessed and notified for parents in crisis. The Hobbs Safe Haven baby box was first used in September or 2023, only a few months after being installed, and then again in May 2024. In February, another surrender in a baby box in Belen, New Mexico, occurred.
The hobbs baby box is located in the Hobbs #1 in 301 E White St, Hobbs, NM 88240, on the east side of the building in front of Fowler Street.
The New Mexico Safe Refuge Law allows the surrender of a baby of up to 90 days in a hospital, firefighters or a police station without criminal charges.
According to the Babies of Safe Haven, 58 babies have been delivered to baby boxes since 2017, and 160 delivered have resulted from calls to the National Direct Line of Safe Haven.
