Artificial intelligence tools such as Chatgpt could lead to a “turbocharger” or damage to consumers, including fraud and scams, and the United States government has a substantial authority to measure damage to consumers under the existing law.

Addressing the legislators of the house, the president of the FTC, Lina Khan, said that “fraud turbocompression and scams that could have been enabled by these tools are a serious concern.”

In recent months, a new harvest of AI tools has drawn attention for its ability to generate emails, convincing stories and essays, as well as images, audio and videos. While these tools have a potential to change the way people work and create, some have also expressed concern about how they could be used to deceive to pass by people.

“Through the history of the FTC, we have had to adapt our application to change technology,” said FTC Rebecca Slaughter commissioners. “Our obligation is to do what we have always done, which is to apply the tools we have to these changing technologies … [and] It does not scare this idea that this is a new and revolutionary technology. ”

The FTC commissioner Álvaro Bedoya said that companies cannot escape responsibility simply by stating that their algorithms are a black box.

“Our staff has constantly said that our unjust and misleading practices authority, our civil rights laws, just credit attitude, equal credit opportunities, those applied,” said Bedoya. “There is law, and companies must comply with it.”

The FTC has previously issued a wide public orientation to artificial intelligence companies, and the agency last month received a request to investigate OpenAi on claims that the company behind Chatgpt has deceived consumers about capacities and limitations.
