It has a week since the first round of the NFL 2025 draft was completed, and although we all knew that Tennessee’s Titans were going to take Cam Ward with the No. 1 General Choice, I imagine that the new reality of everything is still shocking for CAM.
That is what is coming with not. 1 General Selection. Your life changes instantly and belongs to a very exclusive club. It is mounted and must deliver or people will remember all the players who were tasks behind you.
Someone who always admired how they handled this type of pressure touch a little more than some would have liked to realize the potential of the selection. Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers Tokt Utah in number 1 in general (sorry, Aaron Rodgers) in the 2005 NFL Draft and, no matter how much I do not want this to be true … 2005 was somehow 20 years ago.
On Friday morning after this year’s first round I was lucky enough to be able to catch up with Alex to talk about his memories of Draft, how he sees the league as a whole. You can see our conversation below.
At that particular moment, we have just passed the 20th anniversary of its selection draft. Time really flies.
Obviously, I played this with Alex and noticed how he changed the life of a thing that was for him.
“It was very surreal. Obviously my life changed. I am 40 years old.”
It was a decisive moment for me. Be on the cover of each newspaper in the country. The face of the franchise as a 20 -year -old for the San Francisco 49ers, an organization impregnated with Legacy of Quarterback Play. “
“… Like a 20 -year -old boy trying to navigate that … it was something that I … I don’t know how you could be prepared. My life certainly changed. I never thought I had a 16 -year -old career, obviously a race, forms.”
While Smith was the best option in 2005, his career did not fill out of starting to bloom until 2011. I have already demonstrated my age by noting that 2005 was so far in the rearview mirror, but forgive me for not making happy and noticing that Isdes. You have to start running like a no. 1 Choose in modern times. Consider 2021 class (only four years ago) and how those quarterbacks are discussed. Trevor Lawrence is the surviving lonely, so to speak, and even has its skeptics, but other first round teams such as Zach Wilson, Trey Lance and Mac Jones have no longer been pronounced as the type by several teams.
Alex Smith played at a unique moment in this way and, therefore, had a unique race. Many people know him because of the horrible injury he suffered several years later, while he was the titular field marshal in Washington, and his return story has been told due to how remarkable it is.
While Alex prevailed in that particular fight, he took a Herculean effort from a medical point of view so that this was true. What is more is that it was a great inner reflection and, sometimes, as he told me, he had doubts and concerns. Alex talked about how we should all be willing to talk about issues such as what happened and his association with VERTEX Pharmaceuticals and his initiative of “Pain Plan” that seeks to train athletes and not athletes equally to work with their doctors to create personalized pain plans in case of an injury or before surgery.

Our thanks to Alex and VERTEX Pharmaceuticals for the moment.
