New York City denied Jewish educators a day of religious observance this week to prepare for Easter, according to the post.
The eight -day Jewish holidays begged on Saturday, April 12 of this year, coinciding with Jewish Saturday, a rest day. Those who travel, who prepare for the Seder party or perform traditions prior to coating such as the elimination of elevant foods had to do so in the days before the holidays.
But school employees who expected to take Friday as religious holidays were not lucky.
A memorandum sent to school leaders at the beginning of the week said Whoy whose day off on Friday to prepare for Easter would have to “consider/discuss an alternative schedule”, request a personal or vacation day or work from home.
“There may be employees who require additional free time on April 11 to prepare, or travel, for religious observance,” said the notice, which was shared with the position.
When consulting an “alternative schedule”, he suggested to move lunch at the end of the day.
The defenders pressed the City Council and the Chancellor of the Melissa Aviles-Ramos schools this week to allow the day of religious observance, but the authorities decided against Thursday, determining that Friday was not a religious day, the sources said.
A spokeswoman for The Doe It “supports our teachers and staff of all religions”, but remained in the memorandum sent earlier this week.
“While Easter begins on Saturday this year, any personnel member who needed free time the day before being able to request that his schedule be reorganized to leave early on Friday without payment losses a personal business day.”
A City Council spokesman also reiterated the option of taking a paid personal day, adding: “Mayor Adams has always dedicated himself to promoting an inclusive work environment for people of all religions, including those of the Jewish community.”
Jewish educators and activists criticized the decision.
“Obviously, we are disappointed with their decision and the Jewish personnel hit, isn’t it that the adaptations were enough to fulfill their religious bondigations of the day,” said Moshe Spern, president of the group of United Jewish teachers?
Tova Plaut, teacher and co -founder of the Alliance of Public Schools in New York City, said the decision “erases the central Jewish values and ignores the voices of those who live for them.”
“The DOE has been responsible for canceling the centuries of Jewish law, deciding that he knows better than the rabbis when and how Jews take into account Easter,” he said.
Disputes have emerged over the decades in which Easter and the Holy Day of the Good Friday do not fall spring system of the Public School System, which Jonday begins.
In 2024, the DOE granted the last two days of Easter, after setback of parents and teachers, according to the reports.
